BAR POT -
20th. April 1969.
Party:- Jim Newton, Eccles, Chris, Herbert, Pete
Llewellyn, Steve Hesketh, Steve Potter, Hodge and a
member of L.C.M.R.S.
The
first of many big trips (I hope) after the A.G.M. attracted many members an
early afternoon saw me leading the laddering party down the meek mild gentle
orifice of Bar Pot.
The
descent was without incident except at the big pitch when several hard
experienced potholers discovered they had forgotten how a belay works, so while
they scratched their heads I calmly undid 300ft. of rope that had tied itself
in a dirty great knot during the many months of inactivity at the farm. Soon
the oo's and ah's due to
the height of north passage gave way to the other oo's
and ah's as we entered the main chamber.
East
passage was explored to its extremity and some hardy individuals even entered
the new B.P.C. extension though I found the mud I ate unfit for the hardiest
hippopotamus. Returning through the main chamber I observed queer glutinous
growth spurting towards the waterfall, then the illusion was shattered as the
five B.P.C. extension hard men emerged from the other side.
On
the surface I made another momentous observation. The cunning fiends were
harnessing my tremendous power to move vast amounts of equipment to and from
the caves as I found three hundred feet of muddy rope, put there by schhh ... you know who, in my bag. I have come to the decision
that I am not hard anymore and somebody else can carry "that rope"
for a change.
