LECK FELL
By

19th.
January '64. Once again it was time for the Red Rose to
invade Leck Fell and a party of Red Rose regulars and a few others duly set off
for our objectives, Nippikin, Pippikin,
Peterson and Smokey Holes, a fair trip
for the Red Rose.
NIPPIKIN POT. This was the first hole to be attempted and
after a series of messages had been successfully (?) bellowed down the main pitch
some of our party eventually reached the top of the final pitch. This proved
very tight and a ferret was duly called for. Not being too keen (as usual) he
was screwed through the tight entrance to the pitch, and deposited at the
bottom. There followed a deathly silence from below and the bods
above were getting worried (thank you chaps) but then came that common potholers
cry from below, ‘too tight’. further ferrets were forthcoming and a retreat up
the next pitch was made and only
after frantic cries from below was it realised that I wanted a pull through the
tight part at the top of the pitch.
PETERSON POT. This hole also beat some of the party at the
tight parts but after a lot of struggling Lee and I managed to make our way
along the tight crawl at the bottom for a short distance. Female members were then
called for to push this crawl further but with no avail.
PIPPIKIN POT.
A comparatively easy hole and all the party reached the final chamber which all
aggreed was very impressive.
SMOKEY HOLE.
This was an old Red Rose dig and it was decided to have another look at it. It
can be descended without tackle and seems a promising hole. Otherwise no
change.
