RED ROSE POTHOLE CLUB

NEWSLETTER No. l

Having reached 11 years of age it has been decided that the R.R.P.C. is old enough to publish a newsletter and a great expense this - publication has been produced.

At the last General Meeting there was a change of offices. A. Woodall becoming Hon. Sec., T. Sykes Hon. Treas., and an Hon. President - J. Eyre was elected.

Club Hut

The club has been fortunate in obtaining an outbuilding of the Flying Horse Shoes, Clapham, for a headquarters. Potholing has had to suffer in consequence - as a great deal of work has been, and still is being done at the ‘Hut’. But alas the proximity of so much ale has proved too big a temptation for some of the weaker minded members, and several now seem to be taking the cure.

Meets.

Club meets have been held at Notts. Pot and Lost Johns. Notts Pot unfortunately was never bottomed, owing to the hole becoming a trifle moist! Lost Johns was more of a success, and what is believed to be the Rumbling Hole inlet was explored until a siphon pool was reached. Another inlet in the Master Cave was dug out, but became too low after a few yards. In this passage a live white moth was seen, and some

was excavated until it was possible to enter. The surface. stream was diverted down V. J. Pot, but a lot of discomfort was experienced on the dig owing to the fact that the unfortunate people involved had to dig lying full length in a large pool of icy water which covered the floor of the passage. A point was reached whore the pool stopped progress altogether, as the roof clipped and forced ones head into the water. After a dry spoil of weather a hole was dug outside the passage and the pool drained off - this left a passage full of very slimy mud and two week-ends were spent clearing this, - leaving the diggers looking like chocolate soldiers.  12' in the passage turned at right angles and the following week-end a small dam of rocks was removed from this point, enabling people to go along a definite stream passage which descended sharply heading in the direction of Marble pot, - But unfortunately, the walls closed in making progress impossible. However, there is a very strong draught and if there arc any thin determined cavers etc  etc.....

Two further digs arc in progress on Warton Crag, a large area of Limestone but with as yet no known cave. Those digs are both promising, and if anything is found it should be a very old system.

Volunteers.

are required for turning the Club Hut from a builders yard, into a habitation f or Potholers - This should not be too hard!! Please apply to any Committee Member, no previous experience necessary.
